Providing Homes, Restoring Dignity

At People in Need Foundation (PNF), we understand that a home is more than just four walls—it's a sanctuary that nurtures dreams, instils hope, and empowers individuals and families to break free from the cycle of homelessness. Our "Housing for the Homeless" initiative is a beacon of change, providing not just shelter but a foundation for a brighter future.

The Need:

Millions of families in India still don’t have access to decent shelter and sanitation facilities. This means no place for children to study, an unsafe environment for women, and poor basic hygiene.

In India, the issue of homelessness is a stark reality affecting countless lives. According to recent estimates, 1.77 million of the country's total population are houseless (Jha, 2016). people in India find themselves without a place to call home. Among the most vulnerable are women-headed households, navigating the challenges of homelessness with courage and resilience.

Our Response:

PNF, in collaboration with SELAVIP Foundation, has embarked on a mission to address this pressing issue. Our housing program specifically targets women-headed households, recognizing the unique challenges they face. For families who were once vulnerable, marginalized, and struggling to survive in makeshift tents, the program has become a lifeline—a transition from vulnerability to security.

From Tents to Secure Homes:

Imagine the struggle—families, particularly women and adolescent girls, grappling with the harsh realities of makeshift tents. They faced challenges ranging from exposure to the elements during rains, the constant threat of snakes, the risk of theft, and the vulnerability to abuse, especially for the children. With the support of our program, these families have now transitioned from such precarious conditions to secure, dignified homes.

Project Highlights:

Direct Impact: To date, our housing program has directly benefited 157 families, offering them more than just four walls and a roof. It's about restoring dignity, providing security, and creating an environment where families can thrive.

SELAVIP Partnership: Our collaboration with SELAVIP has been instrumental in making this program a reality. Together, we have been able to turn dreams of a home into tangible structures, breaking the barriers that keep families trapped in homelessness.

Sanitation: Providing Sanitation to the families make them happy to avoid open defecation problems in the slums of the cities particularly the women and young adolescent girls

Empowering Women: Beyond providing shelter, our program focuses on empowering women as the pillars of their households. From skills training to community support, we aim to create a holistic environment that fosters independence.

Testimonial:

"We lived in makeshift tents fearing harsh weather and theft. Now this house has given our family security. My children can study. I can pursue embroidery work from home. We feel respected in the community." – Parvathi, Ponnur.
